What is a Counterbalance Forklift?

When most people think “forklift”, they picture a counterbalance truck. This is the most common type of forklift. A counterbalance forklift is commonly found in warehouses and is used for general load transportation.

As the name implies, a counterbalance forklift has a cast iron counterweight built into the rear of its body. This weight balances out the weight of the load at the front of the vehicle to prevent tipping.

Counterbalance forklifts typically have four wheels, though smaller three-wheel models are available. They are powered by either gas, diesel, propane, or a battery (electric). Most indoor models are electric.

This equipment is operated by a seated operator, which is why it is often called a sit-down counterbalance forklift. Stand-up models are available, but sit-down forklifts are the most common. Simple in design, sit-down counterbalance forklifts are efficient and easy to use.

They are also more comfortable for operators who need to work long shifts. Stand-up options do not offer this level of comfort.

A counterbalance lift truck is ideal for warehouse operations. This includes loading and unloading trucks, dock to stock storage, and retrieving inventory.

Warehouse forklifts typically have a capacity of 10,000 pounds or less. Counterbalance lift trucks may have a load capacity anywhere from 5,000 to 50,000 pounds. Large models with pneumatic tires built for outdoor use can carry more weight than smaller indoor models with cushion tires.

The lift height of a counterbalance forklift is between 15 and 25 feet, depending on the model. This gives the operator access to tall warehouse shelving. While there are a huge variety of machines out there, the typical counterbalance truck is small and compact, making it easy to navigate tight warehouse aisles.

A counterbalance truck might be a good fit for your business if you commonly perform applications like cross-docking, dock-to-stock runs, or any other back and forth transport. You’ll typically find this equipment used in industries like warehousing, retail, and piping.

Keep in mind that the fuel type you choose will dictate whether or not the equipment can be used indoors. Select a counterbalance lift truck based on your workplace and applications. Make sure you know what you need before purchasing a sit-down counterbalance forklift.
